Who’s Taking You There?

We’re Ryan and Janeth, and we’ve been exploring Cedar Key since 2015—long enough to uncover stories most visitors never hear. What began as a blog (Living Cedar Key) turned into a passion for sharing the island’s hidden history. While many stories are told from the shoreline, this one required something more. After securing a special permit from the state of Florida, we became the only guides allowed to bring visitors to this abandoned island. A once-thriving port, destroyed by an 1896 hurricane and left vacant ever since, now exists as a rare glimpse into Florida’s past. This tour isn’t about crowds or commercialization—it’s about stepping into a place time forgot and experiencing a story few people will ever get to walk through.

How long is the walk? Do I need special gear?

The total walking distance is about 0.5 miles, spread out over the 90-minute visit.

Much of the time is spent enjoying the scenery, listening to stories, and taking photos. The pace is relaxed with frequent stops along the way

No special gear is needed. Just comfortable shoes, water, and a sense of curiosity. We keep everything simple and accessible for all guests.

What should I wear?

We recommend wearing long pants, a long-sleeve shirt, and closed-toe shoes that are okay to get wet.

This helps protect against brush, insects, and uneven ground while keeping you comfortable during the walk. Lightweight, breathable fabrics are ideal in warmer weather.

Are there bugs on the island? What about snakes or wildlife?

Bug conditions vary by season.

In cooler months, bugs are typically minimal to nonexistent. In warmer, rainy months, insects can be more active, and we strongly recommend wearing appropriate clothing and using insect repellent.

The trail we use is a well-traveled, designated path. Wildlife keeps its distance, and encounters are extremely rare.

Your guide leads the group and monitors the trail throughout the walk to ensure a safe and comfortable experience.

With proper preparation, most guests remain comfortable throughout the visit.

Will my feet get wet?

Possibly a little. Depending on the tide and shoreline conditions, you may step in shallow water when getting on or off the boat. It’s brief and part of the adventure.

Is this tour strenuous?

This is not a strenuous tour, but guests should be able to comfortably walk about 0.5 miles at a relaxed pace and stand for short periods of time.
